What Are the Side Effects of CBD?

Our bodies are a miraculous collection of systems, all interconnected and amazingly dependent on one another. We’ve been studying these systems for decades, and there are still mysteries. Adding extra variables to this biological equation can be tricky. And while CBD has been shown to be exceedingly safe, it doesn’t come without a couple of caveats that everyone should be aware of before beginning a regimen.

Bear in mind that CBD is very well-tolerated among the vast majority of its users, but being fully informed is always a wise idea.

Dry Mouth

While dry mouth is usually more associated with the consumption of THC, it is also possible with CBD. This essentially happens when CBD or other cannabinoids bind with the endocannabinoid receptors in the glands of your jaw, inhibiting the production of saliva.

An easy remedy is to simply stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and try to avoid drinks that may end up dehydrating your further like strong coffee or alcohol. Additionally, some people have found it beneficial to chew gum or treat yourself to hard candy as they can encourage the production of saliva.

A debate is brewing whether CBD causes diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems. And while it isn’t common (and severe cases are extremely rare), it is possible: it really just comes down to the individual.

When you first begin taking CBD, take care to monitor and record any difference you feel within your body. If you start to notice any gastrointestinal distress or changes in your bowel movements, consider keeping a CBD journal where you can document your dosages and how you feel on a daily basis. This will help you better understand how CBD affects your body in the short term and over time.

After a couple weeks, if it seems like CBD might be causing increased trips to the bathroom, you’ll have to decide if the benefits outweigh this particular side effect. First, consider adjusting dosage. Try to stay as consistent with your daily doses as possible, as abrupt fluctuations or the occasional extra strong dose might be jarring your body and causing intestinal problems. If your dose is consistent and you’re still having trouble, consider slowly and gradually changing your dose.

Of course, if the problem persists or worsens, consult your doctor.

Drowsiness is a potential side effect of CBD, but considering many people take CBD for this exact purpose, one might categorize it as a benefit instead.

Some physicians have pointed out that when taken with other medications, CBD might intensify the feeling of drowsiness and become stronger than intended. This is especially true for medications that already tend to sedate.

The moral of the side effect story is to monitor your consumption and how your body is reacting, just as you would with any other vitamin, supplement, or medication. Be mindful of other medications you are taking, and seek out professional medical advice if your body seems to be reacting strangely.

Finally, take care to find a brand that you trust. Because of low regulation on cannabinoids, not all CBD brands are created equally or are as committed to producing pure, high quality products. Do your own research, read reviews, and find a brand you trust that will deliver exactly what’s on their label.
